Background

The extraordinary beauty of Chinese art, expressed in its painting, embroidery and ceramics, has been refined over millennia.

The elegant Chinoiserie that we celebrate today arose out of the burgeoning trade between China and Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, as Chinese artisans reflected European tastes and fascination with the Orient.

Today, these ancient arts are kept alive by a small number of artisans, who dedicate their lives to their craft. At J. L. Mackintosh, we are proud to support this work and to bring it to a new audience through the highest-quality handmade furnishings.

Our Philosophy

At J. L. Mackintosh, our ambition is to create beautiful spaces. We create and curate the finest crafts from the Far East, continuing a centuries-old tradition of trade and cultural exchange.

We work directly with master artisans in China who use traditional techniques and the finest materials to produce pieces to the highest possible standard. In doing so, we help keep these crafts alive and support the next generation of artists.

We reject the throwaway culture: our pieces are designed to last for generations. When you purchase from J. L. Mackintosh, you are not only bringing beauty into your home, you are creating the heirlooms of the future.

Our approach

We are proud to offer the world’s most beautiful hand-made wall coverings and fabrics, produced by artists at our studio in China. Everything we produce is hand-made to order and entirely bespoke. We offer full flexibility as to material, colours and design.

Our homewares and objets d’art are produced to the same exacting standards as our wall coverings, and are sourced from small-scale artisinal producers across China and the Far East whom we know and trust.

We provide a complimentary planning service, and we are happy to offer on-site design consultations worldwide.
